You have the right to…
You do NOT have the right to…
- Share your opinions, express yourself, and gather peacefully (which includes protesting)
- Preserve rights you were granted by the University’s own rules or policies
- Keep all the standard legal rights and freedoms that everyone else has, even when they are dealing with the University.
- Join any legal group you want and the University cannot treat you poorly because you belong to that group. Also, student groups can organize, hold meetings, debate issues, and engage in lawful and peaceful demonstrations
- Through action or threat, knowingly block or stop University activities (like teaching, research, or administration)
- On University grounds, knowingly use threatening words that risk clear and imminent violence, psychological harm, or bodily harm to anyone;
- Or knowingly use words that incite others to break the Code of Conduct rules in a situation of clear and imminent danger
- Knowingly enter or stay in a University building if they don’t have the right to be there, or if they intend to obstruct University activities (like staging a sit-in occupation).
- Commit assault, threats of harm, or harassment in a University Context. They also cannot knowingly create a situation that unnecessarily endangers others

SANCTIONS FOR VIOLATIONS
- Take steps to protect students’ personal security and health
- Not use rules in the Code of Student Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures (“Code”) to limit the rights guaranteed by the Charter of Student Rights
THE “UNIVERSITY CONTEXT”
- This is the official term for when the University’s rules apply, covering three main areas: On University land, sponsored events, and completely off-campus
- If a student breaks these rules, they can face severe consequences, including
- Suspension: loss of University privileges, potentially including the right to enter campus for a specified time),
- Dismissal: termination of student rights, banned from reapplying for up to two years)
- Expulsion: permanent ban from the University). They may also be fined
