ADVOCACY
Our Wellness initiatives focus on supporting students’ mental, physical, and social health through inclusive programs, accessible resources, and peer support. We aim to create a culture of care and well-being within the SSMU community.
The Equity Commissioner is responsible for supporting the operationalization of the SSMU’s mandates surrounding social justice, anti-oppression, and accessibility, including the Equity Committee. Email: equity@ssmu.ca & equity2@ssmu.ca
REPRESENTATION
The Commissioner will work to dismantle gendered and sexualized oppression both within the SSMU and McGill University. They will strive to represent Queer students to the SSMU and will be responsible for engaging with Queer students through consultation with the Gender and Sexuality Committee by engaging in community-building and utilizing the SSMU’s existing services to support Queer students. The Indigenous Affairs Commissioner is responsible for representing Indigenous students at the SSMU through the work of the Indigenous Affairs Committee. The Commissioner is mandated to support Indigenous equity by organizing and facilitating events aimed at uplifting and meeting the needs of Indigenous students on campus. The Black Affairs team supports black student empowerment and student life across the society and McGill campus.
STUDENT RIGHTS
Student Rights Commissioner & Student Advocacy Commissioner The Student Rights Team supports student advocacy initiatives by coordinating research and campaign development in the University Affairs portfolio, specifically around assessment, accommodation, and academic rights. RECOURCES
The Library Improvement Fund Commissioner coordinates the yearly allocation of the Library Improvement Fund and the SSMU’s relations with the McGill libraries. Email: lifc@ssmu.ca
The Open Educational Resources (OER) Commissioner works along with the OER assistant and coordinator to evaluate the strategy for which courses to prioritize. They also communicate with the McGill professors to include material from their classes as part of the SSMU Open Educational Resource project. OER@ssmu.ca
The Menstrual Health Commissioner will be a part of the Menstrual Health Team to ensure that the SSMU Free Menstrual Products Initiative effectively adheres to its mandate of providing free menstrual products on campus. Additionally, the Menstrual Health Commissioner will plan for the program’s expansion and longevity, exploring further ways to improve menstrual equity at SSMU and McGill.
